The Burdens That the Earth Bears

Nature's UmbrellaImage by Swamibu via FlickrBy Radhanath Swami

There are two kinds of burden that the earth bears. One burden is painful and unbearable. The other burden is pleasurable, and is a burden of love.

To understand the burden of love, we first take the example of a mother. When a mother holds her child on her lap, even if the child is grown up, even if the child is heavy, the mother feels extreme pleasure. The businessman serves as a second example. When a businessman carries lots of wealth, that wealth is heavy, but he gets happiness through that. Great spiritual personalities are yet another example. When great personalities take responsibilities to help others selflessly, it is a burden on them. But because it is a burden of love and compassion, it is the source of great pleasure for them.

When we utilize the resources of mother earth in harmony with the scriptural injunctions, that burden is a burden of love for her. But when utilization of her resources is based on greed, ego, insensitivity and disrespect towards her, there is going to be violent reactions. According to the laws of nature as mentioned in the scriptures, for every action there is an equal and corresponding reaction. As a result of our painfully burdening mother earth, calamities like earthquakes, tsunamis, cyclones and tornado come and cause so much sorrow and sufferings in human society.

When will human society learn that for peace and happiness to be there on earth, we must live in harmony with the will of mother earth, which is the will of the Lord as revealed in the scriptures of the world?
