What Gets Wasted In Our Cities?

Every day our large cities produce tons and tons of waste. This waste, if not dealt with properly could easily have a massive impact on our health, our homes and our lives in general. Most waste is gathered up by our bin lorries and either dumped in landfills, burned in giant furnaces or recycled. We rely on our local services to deal with all this dirty work for us but imagine what it would be like if it was down to us to dispose of our waste further than just into your wheelie bin?

So what kinds of waste do our cities produce the most?

Food Waste

Even though there are starving children around the world, one of the things we waste the most of, is food. This could be all that is left on our plates at the end of a big meal, it could be that packet of fresh salmon that you forgot about at the back of the fridge two weeks ago, or it could be the thousands of tons of food waste that is out of date (but still perfectly edible), which supermarket staff are forced to throw out every day.

Plastic Bags

You may have noticed that in the last year, big supermarkets have stopped giving you plastic bags as standard. Instead you either have to ask for them, pay a few pence for them or buy them before you get to the checkout. This was instigated because it was found that plastic bags are one of the most wasted items in the UK. How many trees can you spot without a plastic bag stuck in them?

Office Waste

With bigger cities generally having bigger and bigger offices, the amount of waste they produce can be significant. Luckily government and private corporate policy is helping to stem this by cutting out certain luxuries, like spring water in every office. This for example saves on water as well as on plastic cups. An office clearance can also produce a large amount of recycling that could well offset any waste that has been produced in the past.

Energy and Water

Unfortunately for our planet, another of the most wasted things in our cities is energy and water. Things like televisions being let on standby, heaters being left on in unused rooms and dripping taps account for a large proportion of the total energy used per household. By being vigilant it is possible to cut serious amounts of money from your heating or electricity bill and to stop any needless waste of water.
