Many people understand the importance of recycling. Because people understand the importance of recycling, many cities throughout Richland Country, South Carolina provide resources to allow their residents to participate in recycling programs. For some communities, this means they have a location where they can drop-off recyclables. For others, it means their city has provided them with the resources to allow them to participate in a curbside recycling program.
One of the cities in Richland County that has the greatest resources for participating in a recycling program is Columbia. Residents of Columbia, South Carolina, are provided with a curbside recycling program. Through this program, residents can recycle cans made of aluminum, steel, or aerosol cans. They can also recycle plastic bottles, jars, and jugs. Glass that is brown, green, or clear is also accepted through the city's curbside recycling program. The city also has the resources to allow residents to recycle aluminum foil and paper including magazines and newspaper. For those who do not want to use the curbside recycling program or for those who have more items that need recycling, the city also has an unstaffed drop-off site that is available to residents 24 hours a day. Other than aluminum foil, everything that residents can recycle through the curbside program can also be recycled through the drop-off site.
Columbia, South Carolina also has resources to allow residents to recycle electronics. The Public Works Facility allows residents to drop off items like old computers, VCRs, DVD players, and cell phones. This can be done Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm.
Another city in Richland County that provides their residents with several resources for recycling is Forest Acres. This city also provides curbside collection. Many of the same items that are accepted through Columbia's curbside recycling program are also accepted trough Forest Acres' recycling program. The big exception is that aerosol cans and aluminum foil are not accepted in Forest Acres, but Forest Acres' curbside recycling program will accept corrugated cardboard. Forest Acres also provides the residents with a drop off site where Monday through Friday they can drop-off their recyclable items from 8am to 5pm. Everything accepted through the curbside recycling program is also accepted at the city's drop-off location. By appointment, the city will also collect and recycle appliances each Friday.
Many locations throughout the county also accept used motor oil so the motor oil can be properly disposed of instead of ending up in the ground and destroying the natural resources of the earth. Many cities throughout the county have one location where used motor oil can be dropped off. Some locations will even accept used oil filters. Columbia, though, leads the county in used motor oil collection sites with about fifteen places that will collect used motor oil. Making sure this used motor oil is taken care of the right way and other recycling practices are important if we want our world to be a place where future generations can live and thrive.
