Pigeon Bay Not Right For Wind Farms by Thomas Henricks

We all are aware of the fact that it is imperative that we move to greener sources of energy. I myself am a firm proponent of that move. Having said that, like everything else, there is a right and a wrong to the implementation of these strategies. I believe we must rely more on these alternative energy sources and in fact I do promote such products online.

One such place that I feel falls into the inappropriate action category is a proposal to place a wind turbine farm in Lake Erie on the Canadian shores near Point Pelee. There may not be a more environmentally significant area in North America.

The whole world is aware of the critically important staging area of the Monarch Butterfly migration that funnels through the tip of Point Pelee. This the most significant point in that migration to permit safe passage across the Great Lakes to mainland on the other side. What affect might several commercial grade windmills have on these delicate creatures?

This area also harbors one of the most significant bird migrations in North America. People come from across the world to see birds that they may not have the opportunity to see anywhere else during their lifetime. In addition to the variety of songbirds, hawks, gulls and shorebirds, the Jack Miner Bird Sanctuary not too far away, is world renowned for the goose migration it benefits. Can a wind farm on these shores be considered an intelligent decision?

The residents of these lake shores dare not change the footings on their docks without ministry approval. How could they possibly endorse such an unknown as a wind turbine farm in these sensitive regions?

Point Pelee National Park has instituted tight controls relating to visitor activity on that environmentally significant area to preserve plants and animals that include species not found anywhere else in Canada. Surely it does not warm their hearts to hear that a commercial operation wishes to place these environmental behemoths right on the shores of the property that they have been fighting to preserve.

As I said in the beginning, I believe in the need for green energy. I just don't think it fits everywhere. We must use our common sense regarding these issues. A local group opposed to Lake Erie wind turbines labeled CALEWT (citizens against lake Erie wind turbines) has launched a petition to fight against such a project.
