The Ozone Layer - What is Happening Up There?

The Ozone Layer by John Michael White

Above the earth's surface we have various layers of protection that are found in our atmosphere. One of these layers is called the Stratosphere. This area is absent from any clouds, and extends around eleven to thirty miles above us. It is here that we find what we know to be called as the Ozone layer.

It has similarities to the human Liver, in that the ability it possesses to renew or repair itself is evident under ideal conditions. This layer is very important to us, to the extent that it soaks or absorbs almost all of the harmful U.V. rays from our Sun, thus preventing them from reaching the earth's surface and causing damage.

In 1984 the first detection of the Ozone depletion had been uncovered. Each Summer over Antarctica, a large hole develops and this hole or thinning of the Ozone layer is apparently growing every year. I also believe that a similar hole has been detected over the Arctic. Mostly the reasons for this happening are an increase use of chemicals such as, Chloro-fluoro-Carbons. In other words Carbon emissions like, aerosol cans, refrigerator coolants, medical sterilizers, etc.

Other menaces to the cause are Halons, Methyl Bromide, Methyl Chloroform and Carbon Tetrachloride. Because of the way we are abusing our planet we are experiencing certain damaging effects. One of these of course, as we are now made aware of, is global warming, the other is the hole in our Ozone layer.

It is apparent that health problems are on the rise, such as an increase in severe sunburns, skin cancers, etc. And because U.V. radiation is increasing we inevitably need to protect ourselves more and more form the harmful U.V. rays that are sneaking through our atmosphere. Be sensible in the Summertime, wear a hat, protect your skin by using a high U.V. skin lotion and only expose yourself to the sun for ten minutes or so at one time. Even this can be to dangerous in some parts, namely New Zealand and Australia where skin cancers have risen dramatically.

So please take care in our ever changing climate.
