Choking To Death - The Lakes Of Rotorua

By John F Fleming

Good things are worth looking after.

Residents are expressing satisfaction at the improvement in the water quality of Lake Rotoiti. Visitors have been going to Rotoiti since the mid 40's and over time the quality of the lake water has gradually deteriorated. The reason is the nutrients flowing through the Ohau Channel from Lake Rotorua, with the result that over the years there has been a steady build up of nutrients, resulting in massive weed growth.

There have been many meetings, and committees set up to solve the problem, but it was not until a team from Waikato University came up with a plan to build a wall in Lake Rotoiti to divert the nutrient-laden water from Rotorua. The idea was that the wall would catch the nutrients and divert them down the Kaituna River. After court hearings and appeals, the Environment Court gave consent to build the wall.

The wall been built for about a year now, and already residents are noticing an improvement. The wall is a kilometre long and starts at the Ohau channel outlet, which links Lake Rotorua. It is 75m from the shore and raises to just above water level. It has been a major engineering project at a cost of about $50 million.

To see such good results in just a year, must be rewarding to all those who made it happen. The project could well be the saving grace of Lake Rotoiti. We all know how hard it can be sometimes be to get a worthwhile project off the ground. This group of concerned residents and scientists made it happen. The environment, and a dying lake needed help. Where there is a will there will always be a way.

My name is John Fleming and I live in New Zealand. I am retired and recently have found internet marketing. It was all foreign to me but I am learning and having fun at the same time. I know that with the changing world the internet is going to be an even more powerful tool for marketing. Just like the team work that made that wall a reality, without a team of expert marketers, I would have found it harder launching my Internet marketing business.
