OPINION: Is BP to Blame?

By Wayne LeBlanc

No-one takes the blame for his or her mistakes any more. Oil is gushing into the Gulf of Mexico and instead of accepting responsibly and finding a way to stop the flow BP is playing the blame game. The government had to have a congressional hearing to determine the facts surrounding the spell so they could blame BP and demand they pay for the cleanup. Inside of taking responsibility, BP shifted the blame to Transocean and the government hearing was a waste of time.

The day after the hearing, BP had the audacity to petition Congress to cap the amount they would have to spend on the cleanup even though they made two billion dollars the first quarter of this year. BP's concern is the bottom line and the politicians are worried more about their campaign contributions than the people they represent. This is a perfect example of the total ineptness of the government and their bedfellows the big oil companies. The oil spill has long-lasting repercussions, will affect the environment for decades, and people's way of life will be lost forever.

The people living in the affected areas cannot understand why the flow has not been stopped. It has been over a month now; and there must be one person who has the solution but if they do not work for BP, their ideas are shelved. The residents residing in the area came up with a plan to try and stop the oil from invading the wet lands but have to wait for a permit from the government before instituting the project - another example of government ineffectiveness. The plan is approved by the Army Core of Engineers but the government has no way to by-pass the permit process resulting in more daily destruction and further clean up. Each passing day more and more people are being affected and the ones responsible continue to drag their feet.

The answers to these problems are simple - any man-made disaster is the responsibility of the companies involved, the government will immediately take over the operation, do all in its power to stop the damage, change policies to insure quick reaction, and hold hearings when the crisis is over. This plan will never work, as the government and BP are the experts at playing the blame game.
