OPINION: The Older Man's Perspective on the Gulf Oil Spill

By Wayne LeBlanc

For five weeks, the media has bombarded us with the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The blame has been centered on BP, who owned the rig, and has been unsuccessful in stopping the flow resulting in the largest man-made disaster in our history. Today, the government announced the Justice Department would launch a full-scale investigation against BP, which could result in criminal prosecution.

The President held a news conference, dispatched a number of his cabinet members to Louisiana, and promised BP will pay for the cleanup. He has taken responsibility for not realizing the enormity of the disaster and will do everything in his power to make sure BP is held financially accountable and the people in the region affect will receive assistance. His administration is under fire for lack of involvement even though he explained that BP is the expert - this oil spill is the first of its kind and the consequences may not be known for decades to come.

People around the country have watched this unfold for five weeks and just want to see the oil stopped. They feel helpless as the humanitarian aid, which follow natural disasters don't apply in man-made disasters leading to their frustration. All man-made disasters can be prevented, as the cause is either machine breakdown or human error - this case was an ego contest between BP and Transocean executives on how to cap the well. BP won and the consequences have been horrific.

The people residing in the affected area will be forgotten when the problem is alleviated. BP has taken something money cannot replace -a way of life, which was passed down from generation to generation - has destroyed a part of nature, which will take decades to recover: due to the greed of the company and the ego of a man.
