Human Intrusion in Wildlife and Ecological Balance

By Celeste Merkins

Wildlife has a lot of meanings. Its meaning may be based depending upon its use. It may mean all plants and animals that live in their natural habitats, unattended to by humans, or all animals in their natural habitats, or only the animals with backbones or, in the more popular use, birds and mammals. You may ponder what it is in wildlife that we protect it from extinction. Well first and foremost, wildlife is considered one of the planet's natural resources.

The next one is the fact that wildlife has economic value. You can gain a lot of income from many forms of wildlife. It also enhances the artistry and beautification of the surroundings. It will add color to the environment which will be more pleasing to the eyes. Wildlife has genetic value. Each species made are unique and its genetic character combination may never come about again once the species becomes extinct. Last but not the least it plays a role in food cycles in nature.

You may also ask how humans harm wildlife species. Well actually there are two ways. The first one is to directly collect and kill all the species. The second one is indirectly by destroying or changing their habitats, including the destruction of organisms on which they feed as well as the introduction of predators, parasites and competitors.

At present, people have been disturbing the ecological balance through an increase in the rate of population growth during the present century. For instance forests, swamps, and other land areas have been converted into agricultural lands and similar areas are being transformed into residential subdivisions to provide the people with additional homes, roads and parking lots. In the process, numerous plants are destroyed. As population density increases, the same factors limiting populations of other organisms are in operation for humans. And so, available space and food affect the patterns of human life in the biosphere.
