POLLUTION: Toner Cartridge Pollution

By Mark Byram

Consider for a moment the environment we all live in. Information technology has taken the world by storm. Anyone and everyone in the western world has a computer for their business/home use, these computers need printers and often, more than one. These printers need toner or ink cartridges, which run out on a regular basis and therefore, the environment has created a market in which high demand will continue to be constant and growing with the population.

Within North America alone, there are over 350 million ink and toner cartridges (2006) discarded each year and growing at a tremendous rate as technology is further integrated into our daily lives. That's 8 cartridges per second and growing at 12% per year in North America alone. Do the simple math, if it takes a gallon of oil to produce the cartridge itself then you just used 350 million gallons of oil.

Not to mention that the cartridges then have to be located somewhere when they're empty, how much space do we have considering each laser cartridge equates to about 3 1/2 lbs. of solid waste. Our natural resources are being depleted at an alarming rate and we as a nation must often rely on other Countries to supply the American demand.

It has been estimated these cartridges can take up to 450 years to decompose, with certain parts taking over 1,000 years. Imagine the impact we as consumers and business owners can have by simply using re-manufactured cartridges. The re-manufactured cartridge can yield savings of up to 50% on the cost of a replacement in addition to increasing the lifespan of that cartridge and reducing the addition of said cartridge to solid waste.

At http://www.ecoprintstore.com we care about what it is we do, we are saving the world one cartridge at a time. We utilize ISO 9001 companies so we can guarantee our products, we offer free shipping and several billing options. Remember, Print Green; Save Green.

Caveat: Make sure the company you select to re-manufacture is actually facilitating their re-manufacture and not just throwing them away. We actually came upon one of these discarder companies and took some pictures. It is also important to ensure you choose a company who truly cares about the environment we live, lest your efforts end up in the same place as the discarder company, the trash.
