ZEITGEIST: Taking Care Of Earth Business

by Art Gib

Our environment is under attack. With over six billion people on the planet using demonstrated harmful toxins in their everyday lives something is going to give. The earth itself will survive. The question is will the life that exists on the earth survive?

Our earth is a wonderful caretaker. Land is available for life to live on. Fresh water is freely given with rainfall to sustain our organic constitutions. An ozone layer surrounds our earth to protect us from burning to a crisp by the strength and power of the sun. We are in an optimal orbit that provides just enough heat and cold to sustain our fragile lives.

There is a small variance of mere single digit percentage points that define the difference between sustainable life and not sustainable as we know it. If the oxygen and carbon dioxide are compromised, most life will simply die. If the oceans lose their vitality, life cannot continue to sustain itself. If it gets too hot or cold, life will become unbearable for a while and then die out.

There is a delicate balance to existing life on this tiny planet and it is all connected. If one system gets out of whack, then other systems will follow.

Many people believe that the earth is just in a state of flux a normal occurrence for the earth to adjust and stretch her legs. But, the simple fact is that there are more people on the planet than there ever has been. We are using industrial methods that use toxins that have only been in existence for little more than a century. Plant and animal life are steadily disappearing while more buildings and man made environments are built that don't include plants or animals.

The "green" movement is progressively getting stronger around the world and that's not a bad thing. Even if we don't destroy the earth we have a responsibility to it and its inhabitants. Even though the earth is an objective caretaker, she is still the caretaker. Earth probably doesn't care one way or another what survives or what doesn't, but she still provides the means for life to exist.

Taking care of our environment isn't a "liberal" or "extremist" thing to do it's responsible. More and more companies with the means to help the earth and her inhabitants are doing what they can to help our environment. More of us need to help in the little ways. No matter what your beliefs are, being responsible for what your impact is on the earth can never be a bad or inconvenient thing to do.
