Make a Worm Bin

Freshly bedded worm bin, garden waste mixed wi...Image via WikipediaBy Brigham Dallas

You probably have everything you need to start your own worm bin at home. Here is what you will need:
  1. Drill with drill bits
  2. Bin - plastic bin will do. It does not need to be too big
  3. Worms - Red Worms or European Nightcrawlers
  4. Dirt - moist soil and a few pieces of shredded newspapers
  5. Cardboard box: cutout a piece the size of the bin bottom
Let's get started:

Take your bin, turn it upside down and drill some holes in the bottom of your bin. You need maybe 5 or 6 to drain water and increase breathability of the bin.

Next place your cardboard cutout into the bottom of the bin. This should cover the entire floor of the bin. Cover the floor of your bin with a layer of newspaper and then moisten the newspaper with water.

Next add your worms. If you are buying worms, I recommend the Red Worms because they are voracious eaters. Spread the worms over the newspaper.

Add the dirt into the bin. Use the same soil that's in your garden or buy peatmoss or coir for the worms.

Next, add some food. You can use just about any kitchen scraps that you have or even plant clippings.

There you have it! Make sure the bin stays in a dark area and the worm dirt stays moist. Feed the worms once a week and keep the temperatures moderate (a garage will probably work - or even in the house). Does your worm bin stink? Nope. The worms use aerobic composition and will not produce the nasty odor that an ordinary, anaerobic composting bin will make.

Benefits of a worm bin include:
Soil Amendment for your plants and a reduction in the carbon footprint that land fills make.
